CSE 2023 Annual Meeting: Reflecting on Community: Opening Borders in Scholarly Publishing

2023 CSE Annual Meeting: Reflecting on Community: Opening Borders in Scholarly Publishing

The 2023 CSE Annual Meeting will take place April 29–May 2 in Toronto, Ontario. An exciting destination for attendees, the city of Toronto offers a variety of attractions, collaborative venues, multicultural communities, and culinary experiences. This year’s meeting will be a fully in-person event. We are excited to return to an in-person format in 2023 and will be offering multiple short courses, roundtable discussions, poster presentations, and networking options. Opportunities to attend CSE events virtually will be available during the CSE Fall Virtual Symposium and the CSE Webinar and Connect events throughout the year. As Program Co-Chairs, we are thrilled not only about the destination of this year’s meeting but also about the scope of content currently being developed. The scholarly publishing industry has experienced rapid evolution in recent years. As we look to the future, the resources of CSE continue to be invaluable to scientific communication education, networking, and engagement.

The theme for the 2023 annual meeting is “Reflecting on Community: Opening Borders in Scholarly Publishing.” Part of our inspiration for this theme comes from the city of Toronto itself. The charming location boasts an inspiring motto: “Diversity Our Strength.” The CSE Program Committee has been working with individuals who submitted session proposals and moderators to develop an excellent slate of educational sessions around this theme. The program for the annual meeting will cover topics such as open access; managing society and publishing relationships; diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility; ethics and research integrity; as well as other critical topics in scholarly publishing. Attendees will be able to select from 24 breakout sessions over the course of the meeting as well as participate in networking opportunities, meet with vendors in the exhibit hall, view posters, and join career-focused roundtable discussions. With our continued support in the development of early career professionals, the 2023 CSE Scholarship Program will offer a scholarship this year to one attendee.

In line with this year’s theme, Dr Alpha Abebe, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Humanities, McMaster University, will deliver a keynote address titled, “When Good Intentions Just Aren’t Enough; Engaging Diverse Communities as Partners in Knowledge Production.” Dr Abebe will focus on how scholarly publishing professionals can create space for diverse and innovative forms of knowledge that can deepen and expand the industry’s impact. Our plenary speaker, Kasha Patel, stand-up comedian and science journalist, will discuss the value of accessible science communication. Her session, “A Stand-up Comedian’s Guide to Communication,” will challenge researchers and scholarly publishing professionals to ensure communication is relatable by thinking in new and creative ways.

We are looking forward to once again offering short courses at this year’s meeting. Attendees who would like to add a short course to their registration can select from four short course offerings: Journal Editors; Business of Publication Management; Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility; and Manuscript Editors. As they have in the past, short courses will occur ahead of the annual meeting on April 29 and/or April 30. Each short course will be led by a dynamic panel of topic experts.

Poster presentations will also be a big part of the 2023 annual meeting. Posters offer submitters the opportunity to present original work in a visual way that describes a process with practical and noteworthy implications. Poster presenters may focus problem-solving in a new way or an approach that was taken to achieve a desired result. Attendees can submit an educational poster highlighting a variety of topics related to scientific communication. Education posters proposals are due March 10, and final decisions will be shared with submitters by March 27. Product posters will also be available as an option for exhibitors and will be displayed in a similar fashion in the exhibitor hall alongside educational posters. CSE’s full exhibitor prospectus can be found here.

We hope you will join us in Toronto this spring as we reflect on community by collaborating and learning together! We plan to be challenged, we plan to discover innovative ways to change and evolve, and we plan to engage each other as we look toward the future of scholarly publishing.
